Classroom strategies in language and literature teaching
Dr I Snyder
Second semester * Clayton
This subject explores recent studies in language and literature education and the implications of these for teachers and schools. The primary aim of the subject is to provide opportunities for students to reflect on and extend their own practice by developing workable classroom strategies based on the findings of relevant research and theory. The language component of the subject addresses ways of helping children become more effective language users (in speaking, listening, reading, writing and viewing) and provides opportunities for students to develop teaching and evaluation strategies which can be used to this end. The literature component of the subject examines recent broad definitions of literature, new approaches to the teaching of literature and the role of literature in enhancing children's learning. A strong emphasis is placed on classroom-based investigations in which students apply, evaluate and report on different teaching strategies developed from selected areas studied in the course. Access to a school and classroom is desirable. There is no single prescribed text. Readings will be recommended.
