A study will be made of educational and non-educational leaders. Possible examples in education may include school principals, university deans, civil servants and members of statutory bodies. Examples from outside education may include political leaders at all governmental levels and corporate sector executives. Where possible students may be free to examine cases of their own choosing. These will be examined in relation to, and in turn used to devise, typologies of leaders and leadership. The emphasis of the subject will be comparative and will focus in detail on heroes, the `great man' view of leadership, self, career, values, mentoring, transforming narcissistic and charismatic leaders, and the `gifted amateur' tradition of English public school leadership. Where possible, detailed consideration will be given to the writings of selected individuals and reference will be made to biographies, autobiographies and life histories.
