A course of lectures, videos and activities designed for students wishing to develop skills to work with people of all ages who are suffering from anxiety disorders. The subject addresses classification, aetiological factors and assessment procedures (avoidance tests, anxiety scales etc). Anxiety management techniques are covered including those derived from the principles of classical, operant and vicarious conditioning. Emphasis is placed on the need for exposure in helping people overcome their excessive fears and anxieties, and practical procedures in anxiety reduction will form a central part of this course. Further theoretical and applied issues will be examined including theories of fear-reduction and the social validation of behavioural interventions. This course is suitable for a wide range of participants.
