Methods and practice of teaching geography
3 hours per week * Full-year subject * Clayton * Prerequisites: Two years geography at tertiary level
Students who complete this subject should, within the context of geography, be able to (a) use skilfully a variety of teaching strategies; (b) know when each strategy is appropriate to a particular class or topic; (c) combine strategies to produce effective learning situations; (d) plan lessons, units and courses of study which are relevant to various class levels; (e) evaluate the outcome of their teaching - both formally and informally. They should also have a knowledge and appreciation of the contribution which geography can make to the education of students in secondary schools whether as a separate subject or as an element in a more integrated curriculum, eg within the framework studies of society and the environment. Much useful and up-to-date material is published by the Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria. Membership of the GTAV is open to students at concession rates.
