Education in society
First semester * Clayton
This subject examines schooling as a social activity, occurring in and very much influenced by its social context. Social perspectives are applied to selected issues in teaching, learning and associated activities, to the general functioning of schools as formally organised social institutions, and to some general educational issues, eg schooling and employment, differentiation and discrimination in schools, effectiveness of schooling, policies and prospects for schooling. The recommended reading will serve as an introduction to the understanding of schooling in the Australian context. A detailed reading list will be provided at the commencement of the subject.
