Critical evaluation of instructional and manipulative materials. The planning, implementation and evaluation of a protracted teaching sequence. An investigation of psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic models of language development. Language and literacy development of school-age children and literature-based program development. Assessment and evaluation of language and literacy (informal and formal). The use of microcomputers in information retrieval and analysis (databases, spreadsheets, online information services). The development of research skills needed by children to access, analyse and present information. The social implication of the impact of computers. The study, implementation and evaluation of learning and teaching. Current professional issues in education. Critical evaluation of the ideas underlying primary school science. Research on science teaching. Current curriculum guidelines. Planning, teaching and evaluation of a teaching sequence. The use of microcomputer software in the social studies curriculum. Teaching techniques (eg role simulation), handling values and the use of videos. Unit planning and evaluation. Investigation of curriculum planning in music and classroom music activities suitable for the primary school. Students will develop keyboard playing skills. The examination of curriculum statements and the planning, implementation and evaluation of units of work in physical education. Studies of specific program areas will be undertaken and applied in the context of teaching. An investigation of health education issues relevant to the school community's health values and aims. An examination of curriculum materials available and the development of policies and programs for schools. Investigation of art curriculum guidelines. This subject includes a field experience component. The subject is taught by lectures, workshops, tutorials and practice sessions.
