Teaching world musics

This subject aims to provide students with an appreciation of the richness and diversity of the world's musical cultures and of the problems and opportunities involved in bringing them to the classroom. Along with a survey of selected non-Western music, classes will cover an ethnomusicological approach to the study of music, musical cultures in Australian society and resources and strategies for teaching world musics in primary and secondary schools. The subject will involve some musical performance by students and fieldwork with local musicians.
