Approaches to world music

3 hours per week * Second semester * Peninsula * Prerequisites: EDN3285 and EDN3295 or relevant musical background at the lecturer's discretion

Detailed studies are made of various musical forms in their own context and in relation to Australia. Students are given a background in how to study music of cultures outside their own and are made familiar therefore with different musical behaviour of music relevant to modern Australia. Topics for detailed study are selected from Afro-American music, Australian Aboriginal music, music of Java and Bali (Indonesia), music of South-East Asia, music of China, music of Japan, music of South America, Eastern European folk music.

Assessment

Examinations: 60% * Research project: 40%
