Assisting children with special needs 2

3 hours per week * Peninsula

This subject is a logical extension of studies from the previous semester. It includes an examination of the techniques and strategies used in the identification, diagnosis and helping of children with special social and emotional needs; an examination of the basic counselling techniques and strategies to use with children, their parents, professionals and paraprofessionals, and other members of the greater community; and a detailed examination of how each component of the total curriculum could be used to assist children with special needs. The main focus is on the following curriculum areas and their constituent programs and activities: music, art, human movement and recreation, science, social studies. There will be an emphasis on the application of the concepts and skills developed in the preceding semester to the analysis of given case studies and the application of the concepts and skills acquired in the previous semester to experience.

Assessment

Written: 50% * Fieldwork/Seminar participation/fieldwork folio: 50%
