Arts in Australia and Asia 6: indigenous influences on Australian music

3 hours per week * Second semester * Peninsula

This subject examines how recent musicians in Australia have been influenced by indigenous Asian and Australian arts. Reference to practitioners in other arts will be made where appropriate. For Asia, the main emphasis will be on the areas of East and South-East Asia, therefore continuing the focus which has been established in the first two years. As an example of an Australian musician, the subject will focus on Percy Grainger. In particular, the educational implications of Percy Grainger and Melbourne's Grainger Museum will be studied, including the museum's role as a storehouse for information and artefacts on indigenous arts of Asia and Australia and the implications for the museum of Australians studying the indigenous arts of Asia and Australia.
