The first half of the subject will be concerned with some of the major philosophical ideas which have contributed to the directions education has taken at various times in our society: idealism, realism, pragmatism and existentialism. Philosophical analysis will also be considered as a tool for clarifying the nature of educational problems. The second half of the subject will start by distinguishing philosophy from ideology and theory. Liberalism, conservatism, Marxism, totalitarianism, essentialism, naturalism and progressivism will be used as examples of ideologies which have had a strong influence on educational practice.
