This subject introduces a range of technical and design processes involved in the construction of painting and textiles. Students will be required to select one discipline. The study of textiles will include an investigation of the properties of natural and synthetic fibres, methods of fibre construction, basic stitchery and elementary fabric printing and dyeing processes. The study of painting will include the elementary investigation of painting surfaces and their preparation, and the processes appropriate to transparent and opaque painting media such as inks, gouache and acrylics. Students will be expected to develop drawing and design expertise, including computer skills. The subject will examine art theory and practice through lectures and seminars, excursions to galleries and schools, leading to developing strategies appropriate for general classroom application.
