Advanced topics in information systems management

This subject aims to provide students with an in-depth discussion of some of the key current issues in information systems management and approaches to information systems management practice. It is intended that the subject matter will reflect contemporary developments and research, so the syllabus will vary from time to time, to reflect changes in information systems theory and practice. The main themes in 1995 will be the changing perceptions of the role of information systems within organisations and the associated changing role of the information systems department. Specific topics to be addressed include the organisational role of IT from data processing to competitive advantage; human process management; an introduction to socio-technical systems thinking; the impact of organisational culture, values and policies on the systems development life cycle; outsourcing and downsizing - their implications for IT management; approaches to formulating IT strategy; centralisation vs decentralisation of control of IT functions, with particular reference to the role of end-user computing; integration of IT within the organisation - the management of change.
