Information systems theory

Information systems as a discipline. Research methods for information systems. Soft systems methodology: breakdown of `hard' systems engineering, systems thinking, cultural analysis, logic-based analysis, examples of soft systems methodology in action. Systems theory: history. Systems dynamics: assumptions, aims, applications, feedback, causal diagrams, flow diagrams; information theory; cybernetics. Systems models of organisation design theory: theories and models of design, how designers work, role of experience in design, prototypes, routine, innovative and creative design. This subject is designed for those students who are considering progressing to the honours year. A strict quota based on performance in previous information systems subjects will be applied.

Assessment

Written (2000 words): 50% * Examination (2 hours): 50%
