Systems analysis and design

This subject covers the development of computerised information systems. A four-stage development process is explained: requirements determination, evaluation of alternative system solutions, design of chosen system and implementation. The detailed activities and deliverable products of each development stage are enumerated and any relevant techniques and tools are explained. In particular, system modelling tools and techniques are discussed at some length. In addition, the management of the development process is stressed. Management activities such as planning, monitoring, coordinating and reviewing are discussed. The impact on the development process (as presented in lectures) of 4GL development environments and upper CASE tools is assessed. The role of the traditional development process is examined in the light of the advent of full CASE technologies. Examples and case studies are presented throughout to demonstrate and support the lecture material.
