Each honours student undertakes a substantial individual project which may be of the student's own devising, subject to approval. The project includes writing a thesis, the development of hardware or software where appropriate, and an oral presentation. The project carries approximately 40 per cent of the total weight of the year's work. The remaining 60 per cent of the work is coursework. Honours students are typically required to take six units out of those offered each year. Each unit consists of lectures and seminars plus assigned practical work. Each unit typically involves a two-hour examination at the end of the semester in which it is given plus assignments and essays. Subject to approval by the coordinator, the student may substitute up to two of these units with units in other related subjects in fields such as mathematics, electrical engineering or computer science. The department organises a regular series of seminars, often including interstate and overseas visiting specialists. Attendance at all seminars is a prerequisite for passing the honours subject.
