Outline of graduate studies

Master of Arts in Bibliographical and Textual Studies by major thesis or by coursework and minor thesis

Clayton campus

Introduction

The department takes part in an interdepartmental MA program coordinated by the Centre for Bibliographical and Textual Studies of the Faculty of Arts. No professional qualifications are required for admission, but applicants who are eligible for admission to MLib candidature may elect to follow the MA program in bibliographical and textual studies through being a candidate for the MLib degree.

Admission requirements

The MA is open to graduates with a good pass degree (ie normally with at least a credit in the third part of a major sequence), regardless of discipline. In special circumstances an applicant who lacks the formal entry requirement but whose qualifications, publications and experience are considered by the Faculty of Arts to be a suitable preparation for the proposed field of study may be admitted to candidature.

Fees for Australian residents

For enrolment and fee information, please refer to the Faculty of Arts graduate handbook.

Duration

The coursework component may be taken over one year full-time or two years part-time. The period of total candidature will normally be not less than twelve months and not more than thirty-six months for full-time candidates and not less than twenty-four months and not more than sixty months for part-time candidates.

Course structure

The program normally consists of four subjects plus a thesis but permission may be given for other combinations. In exceptional circumstances candidates may undertake the degree by thesis alone.

Three subjects are required: BTM5010 (Analytical and descriptive bibliography); BTM5020 (Textual studies); BTM5030 (Booktrade history).

The fourth subject may be selected from appropriate subjects offered at a suitable level in any department or faculty (subject to approval) or be taken as a reading subject under supervision (BTM5040).

Thesis

Supervision will be negotiated by the Centre for Bibliographical and Textual Studies in the light of individual interests. All candidates will be expected to report on their research at a seminar conducted by the centre.

Timetable

Normally BTM5010 will be taught in conjunction with LAR5330; BTM5020 in the Department of English (see Dr H R Love for arrangements); and BTM5030 in conjunction with LAR5350.
