Preservation of library and archival materials
First semester * Clayton
This subject aims to acquaint students with current problems of and practice in conserving library and archival materials. It will examine the causes of deterioration of library and archival materials due to factors inherent in the materials, to the environment in which they are stored, and to the manner in which they are handled. The subject aims to impart an awareness of preservation problems and implications for library and archival administration, rather than to teach the complex technical processes necessary to conserve library and archival materials properly. Visits will be made to appropriate sites such as conservation laboratories and a preservation microfilming unit, and there will be demonstrations illustrating some basic techniques.
