Introduction to communication and theories of communication; study skills; reading: skimming vs studying; note taking; summarising; understanding graphics. Library and Internet-based research: indices, abstracts and card catalogues (Sesame2), CD-ROM, on-line searches, archie and gopher. Technical writing: organisation and planning, audience and objective, clear exposition, rewriting, argumentative writing and analytical reasoning, memos, technical reports. Software documentation: external specifications; internal specifications; software commenting. Technical manual writing: programmer manuals; user guides and reference manuals. Formatting and word processing tools; graphical application; hypercard, hypertext. Distribution tools: desktop publishing environments; electronic mail; newsgroups; electronic journals and conferences.
