The computing environment

This subject familiarises students with a variety of computer operating environments in which computing applications function. Students are introduced to several operating systems (eg DOS, Windows, UNIX) to provide them with an understanding of file systems, operating system commands, editing tools and file handling operational tasks, such as copying, deleting, renaming and managing directory structures. Where applicable, security issues will be addressed. Students will gain an understanding of basic network structures, and will be exposed to peer-to-peer and client-server network architectures.

Examination (2 hours): 70% * Assignment: 15% * Practical work: 15%
