Information systems

Students are introduced to the concepts associated with the study and practice of systems analysis. Such fundamental concepts as the system, information data, hierarchy and modelling are presented. The concept of the information system is investigated by reference to examples in industry, commerce and society. The techniques of hierarchy diagrams, data flow diagrams and data dictionary are used to investigate, describe and model information systems. These techniques are placed in context with other activities in the development of information systems as a structured life cycle. Examples of different types of information systems and their uses within government and business are investigated. Some specific applications of information systems are studied.

Assessment

Examination (3 hours): 50% * Practical work/Seminar participation: 50%
