The concept of the information system is investigated by reference to examples in industry, commerce and society. The techniques of hierarchy diagrams, data flow diagrams and data dictionary are used to investigate, describe and model information systems. These techniques are placed in context with other activities in the development of information systems as a structured life cycle.
