Systems analysis

Information systems theory: information requirements; data and information; systems development life cycle; information collection and dissemination; typical information systems. Systems analysis: the nature of analysis; the role of systems analysis within the systems development life cycle; the use of abstraction and modelling within systems analysis; data dictionary. Techniques for systems analysis: data modelling; entity relationship model; attribute collection and normalisation; data structure diagrams; process modelling; activity decomposition; data flow diagrams; minispecs-procedure diagrams, action diagrams and decision tables. Behaviour modelling: event models; entity life-cycle models; state transition models. Completeness and consistency checks: cross-reference matrices; data dictionary entries. Methods for systems analysis: methods and methodologies; structure of methods; data-centred, process-centred, and rapid development methods; evaluation and comparison of systems analysis methods. Computer-assisted software engineering (CASE) tools: architecture and features for systems analysis.

Assessment

Examination (3 hours): 50% * Practical work: 50%
