Introduction
The purpose of the Diploma in Librarianship is to offer professional librarians an opportunity for specialised study and professional development in such fields as computerised systems and services or the history of the book and libraries.
Admission requirements
Applicants for admission must hold a professional qualification in librarianship and must have qualified for a bachelors degree at Monash University or at another university or tertiary institution approved by the faculty, provided that the degree concerned is considered by the faculty to be a suitable preparation for the diploma.
In special circumstances the faculty may admit to candidature an applicant who lacks all or some of the qualifications listed above but whose qualifications, publications and experience are considered by the faculty to be a suitable preparation for the proposed field of study.
Fees for Australian residents
In 1995 the course fee is $4400 or $750 per subject.
Duration
The period of candidature will normally be one year for full-time candidates and two years for part-time candidates.
Course structure
Students are required to study six subjects from among those offered. Individual needs may be met by LAR4200.
Students may also choose from the subjects offered in other departments or faculties of the university, provided that the subject chosen is at an acceptable level and makes up an acceptable specialisation in the diploma.
Timetable
Full-time students will normally attend courses on two days per week. Part-time students will normally attend on one day per week.
Research seminars, conducted by visitors, staff members and students who are engaged in research, are held weekly. Students are expected to attend these seminars regularly during their candidature.
