Associate Diploma of Business (Productivity Management) by distance education

The course

The Associate Diploma of Business (Productivity Management) is an initiative of the Prime Minister's Department and the Australian Productivity Council. It reflects the current Australian emphasis on developing competitive advantage in international markets. The course aims to develop in supervisory and line management non-graduates, whose knowledge is largely self-developed, the ability to recognise and implement improvement opportunities within organisations.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will:

* have combined tertiary study with a career that was well established through knowledge that was largely self-developed;

* have gained appropriate management expertise;

* be capable of contributing to improved organisational productivity, have an awareness of broader business, economic and technological change factors and an understanding of the need to manage and innovate effectively and efficiently in a changing socio-economic environment;

* have fostered the development of positive business ethics, a desire for quality work outcomes and commitment to public and social responsibility.

Course structure

The course consists of eight subjects of study over two years by distance education. The normal study load for distance education students is two subjects per semester. Details of the subjects studied in each stream and the usual sequence are shown below. For various reasons, students may need to vary this sequence. In these cases, individual course advice is provided.

Entrance requirements

This course is open to applicants who possess an appropriate post-secondary qualification. A number of applicants who lack formal qualifications but who have extensive and relevant work experience may also be admitted. A written statement (150 words) should be attached to the application, indicating the perceived value of the course in relation to employment and future career goals, and that the student is aware of the time demands of distance education. Employer sponsorship is available in this course.

Technology requirements

It is recommended that students should have access to a personal computer. (Please note that the School of Business - Gippsland operates in an IBM-compatible windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have access to a modem to facilitate e-mail communication with teaching staff.

Credit for work done elsewhere

A student will be exempted for any subject where an equivalent subject has already been completed at post-secondary level. In such cases a student must select an additional elective subject(s) in substitution for the subject(s) exempted. Application for credit for partially completed courses will be determined on a case by case basis.

Fees

HECS

The Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) requires contributions to be made by students towards the cost of their higher education studies commenced after 1 January 1989. The amount to be contributed depends on the study load (subjects) undertaken each semester, and is payable whether or not a pass in each subject is achieved. More detailed information relating to HECS can be obtained from the Student Administration Office, Monash University, Gippsland Campus, Churchill, Victoria 3842.

Industry partnerships

The Federal Government provides funds to assist industry to improve productivity through the development of skills in an education-industry partnerships, and at the same time enable employees to engage in tertiary education. The School of Business - Gippsland is able to access these funds by forming partnerships with employers to facilitate employee participation in the Associate Diploma programs. Costs are shared and, in this arrangement, the School of Business - Gippsland offers flexibility in delivery mode. In particular, on-campus or on-site lectures and tuition, distance education or a combination of these can be negotiated.
