Combined degrees with Bachelor of Economics - old structure

Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor of Laws

Course code: 0091

Old structure for students enrolled prior to 1992 only

The normal time for the course leading to the two degrees of Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws taken concurrently is five years when both are taken at pass level, and six years when the BEc degree is taken at honours level.

Combined course with pass Bachelor of Economics

Students enrolled for the combined course normally will qualify for the Bachelor of Economics degree at the end of three years, and the Bachelor of Laws at the end of the fifth year. To do so they must complete the subjects listed in the structure following which are taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) and a major sequence in law - LAW1100 (Legal process), LAW2100 (Contract), LAW2200 (Torts) and one third-year law subject, usually LAW3400 (Property I). For purposes of the economics degree the equivalent of three third-year Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) subjects in law consists of two law subjects as these are designed to occupy 25 per cent of a year's work.

It is strongly recommended that LAW3400 (Property I) (marked with an asterisk [*] below) be completed in third year, as it is a prerequisite for LAW4201 (Equity and trusts), LAW5213 (Taxation), LAW5106 (Company law) and LAW5210 (Legal persons).

In general subjects will be selected for the BEc/LLB pass level course as set out below. Option one is normally taken by students who wish to complete a major sequence in accounting. Option two must be taken by potential honours students. Other students may take either option.

Option 1

First and second years

* Refer to faculty handbook for previous years.

Third year

* Three third-year subjects taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton)

* LAW2200 (Torts)

* LAW3400 (Property I) or LAW3300 (Criminal law and procedure) or LAW3200 (Constitutional law).

or

Option 2

First and second years

* Refer to faculty handbook for previous years.

Third year

* Three third-year subjects taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton)

* One first-year subject sequence or two second-year or three third-year subjects taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton)

* LAW3400 (Property I)* or LAW3300 (Criminal law and procedure) or LAW3200 (Constitutional law)

The alternative of three third-year subjects involves double the work load of one first-year sequence or two second-year subjects, and is normally taken only by honours students for whom it is mandatory. In this case the fourth law subject is not necessary for the BEc degree but unless a student is prepared to take some work in law over a summer term, the law degree may require more than the additional two years work after the BEc degree.

Fourth year

* LAW3100 (Administrative law), LAW3200 (Constitutional law), LAW3300 (Criminal law and procedure), LAW5500 (Moot court) and optional law subjects totalling forty-five value units.

Fifth year

* Optional law subjects totalling 135 value units (the unit values attributed to optional subjects are set out in the Law handbook).

Combined course with Bachelor of Economics (Honours)

Students who wish to take the Bachelor of Economics degree with honours must take the compulsory law subjects LAW2100 (Contract) and LAW2200 (Torts) in their second year with ECO2020 (Intermediate microeconomics) and ECO2030 (Intermediate macroeconomics) and two other second-year subjects from the department in which they intend to take honours; in their third year they will take six subjects taught by the faculty including the third-year honours subject, three pass subjects from the honours department and two other faculty subjects plus LAW3400 (Property) or LAW3300 (Criminal law and procedure) or LAW3200 (Constitutional law). The fourth (honours) year of the course will normally be devoted entirely to fourth-year honours subjects.

First and second years

* Refer to faculty handbook for previous years.

Third year

* Four subjects from the honours department (including the honours subject and three pass subjects)

* Two other third-year subjects taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton)

* LAW3400 (Property I)* or LAW3300 (Criminal law and procedure) or LAW3200 (Constitutional law).

Fourth year

* AAF4020 (Accounting) or ECM4020 (Econometrics) or EC04500 (Economic history) or ECO4020 (Economics) or ECO4040 (Economics/econometrics) or PLT4020 (Politics).

Fifth year

* See fourth year under option two for pass Bachelor of Economics

Sixth year

* See fifth year under option two for pass Bachelor of Economics
