Bachelor of Business (International Trade)

Course code: 0389

Course director: Dr Kevin Wong

The course

This course is principally designed for students seeking a career in international business or who are already employed in the international trade sector of the economy and are seeking a relevant qualification on a part-time basis. The course is available in two sequences. Both sequences comprise a core of foundation business subjects (common to all Bachelor of Business degrees at Monash University), specialist studies in areas of relevance to international trade and three electives. The Asian Business Language sequence includes a three-year study in either Chinese or Japanese. The International Business sequence includes an extended range of specialist trade subjects.

Objectives

The course is designed to produce graduates equipped to operate effectively in the international business arena and to:

* provide a thorough appreciation and understanding of the impact the international environment has on Australian business activities. This includes the study of the relationships which exist between individual enterprises and the financial, legal, economic, political and trade systems which comprise the international environment

* provide an understanding and appreciation of the various ways an Australian firm can gain access to foreign markets

* raise students to a level of Asian language proficiency and cultural awareness sufficient for effective interaction with domestic and overseas representatives of foreign businesses (this is achieved through the optional Asian business language sequence);

* develop conceptual and practical skills so that graduates will be able to understand the complexities of the international economy and the major determinants of trade and international economic relations; identify and analyse international business opportunities and problems; understand the law relating to international trade; appreciate the function and characteristics of international financial markets and corporate funding decisions; appreciate the cultural and political aspects of export marketing to sell products overseas successfully.

Venue

Day and evening classes are offered at Caulfield campus. Day classes only are offered at Peninsula campus.

Credit for work done elsewhere

In addition to part one, section four of the degree regulations, the following credit transfers have been standardised for the Bachelor of Business (International Trade):

* holders of a recognised Certificate of Business Studies are eligible for credit for up to a maximum of four subjects in the course, to be determined by the course director

* holders of a relevant associate diploma from a TAFE college may be eligible for credits up to a maximum of eight subjects

Asian business language sequence

Available only at the Peninsula campus, six language subjects must be taken as a sequence of study in one of the Asian Business Language programs offered by the Syme Department of Banking and Finance. These currently comprise business Chinese (Mandarin) and business Japanese. The program assumes no prior knowledge of the language.

The sequence represents a comprehensive training in each language. It differs from traditional language studies in that it focuses on contemporary and business vocabulary.

At the conclusion of the sequence students will have reached a level of competence sufficient to allow them to communicate effectively in social and business situations with native speakers of the language. The elective sequence will therefore complement the business subjects and enhance career prospects.

International business sequence

The international business sequence does not involve a foreign language sequence but includes an additional six specialist international trade subjects. The general business sequence is available only at the Caulfield campus.
