Course code: GB

Course director: Ms Wendy Whittem-Trunz

The course

The Graduate Diploma of Business (Management) is a fee paying postgraduate course by distance education designed primarily for graduates who wish to increase their knowledge of management theory. The course makes extensive use of case studies, in-house situations and workplace projects with a particular focus on Australia's current economic and social climate.

Course objective

On completion of the course students should:

* have the appropriate management expertise to develop commitment and proficiency in the use of strategic and dynamic approaches to modern management

* have the ability to link these management activities to high quality, customer focused outcomes.

* understand the importance of effective strategic, human resource, financial and marketing management.

* have a broad understanding of current management theory, processes, and change issues in an uncertain business environment.

* have fostered the skills to enable them to successfully continue in their managerial careers or to articulate into higher degree studies.

Course structure

The course aims to develop and enhance analytical skills and to teach critical appraisal techniques. The Graduate Diploma of Business (Management) is a two-year, part-time distance education program. It consists of eight subjects (two per semester) and each subject involves an average of ten hours study per week. There are five common core subjects which must be satisfactorily completed prior to or in conjunction with the integrating strategic management subject GBU8005. In addition to the six compulsory subjects, there are two recommended subjects which can be adopted or students can opt for the flexibility to choose two elections in areas of their professional interest.

The usual sequence of study is:

Year one

First semester

* GBU8001 Management theory and practice (core)

* GBU8003 Management processes and systems (core)

Second semester

* GBU8002 Human resource management (core)

* GBU8004 Financial management (core)

Year two

First semester

* GBU8010 Marketing management (core)

* GBU8034 Industrial relations (recommended) or approved elective

Second semester

* GBU8005 Strategic Management (core - integrating subject)

* GBU8006 Management strategy project (recommended) or approved elective

* Electives

The following electives can be selected in consultation with the course director. They are available for adoption subject to the approval of the head of school and their availability:

* GBU8009 Training and development

* GBU8015 Economic policy

* GBU8018 Business law

* GCO8019 Computers in business

* GBU8042 Organisational behaviour

* GBU8044 Financial institutions management

* GBU8046 Money, banking and capital markets

In some instances, a complementary subject from another program of equivalent level, eg Health administration 1 and 2, Engineering management, may be permitted.

Assignments and study materials are designed to challenge students to link management theories and principles to everyday workplace situations. Throughout, this course aims to develop the students' ability to think clearly, critically and independently about how to improve employee relations, organisational processes and work practices in a competitive global environment.

Entrance requirements

Admission to the course will be open to applicants who possess an undergraduate degree, or equivalent tertiary qualification and who have had at least three years full-time appropriate employment or experience. In exceptional circumstances, applicants who do not possess formal qualifications will be considered for admission provided they can demonstrate each of the following:

(a) five years experience in management at the executive or senior supervisory level;

(b) a written statement (150 words) attached to the application - indicating the perceived value of the course in relation to employment and future career goals, and that the student is aware of the time demands of distance education;

It is essential that subjects submitted for credit and exemption fit the philosophy and principles of this postgraduate course of study.
