The course

The Graduate Diploma of Business (Labour-Management Relations) is a fee paying postgraduate course by distance education designed primarily for graduates from a range of disciplines who wish to develop their industrial relations and human resource knowledge and skills.

Course objectives

On completion of the course students should:

* have a vocationally oriented understanding and comprehensive knowledge of Australian labour management relations theory and practice which satisfies the needs of graduates from a range of disciplines;

* have acquired skills in the analysis and synthesis of labour relations practices through examination of current theories and models of industrial relations and human resource management;

* have an understanding of the dynamics of the labour market, the nature of industrial law and the linkages of these to management practice.

Course structure

The usual sequence of study is:

* GBU8037 Industrial law

* GBU8042 Organisational behaviour

* GBU8038 Employment relations policy and practice

* GBU8036 Issues in labour economics

* Elective

or

Stream 2 - Human resource management

Year two

First semester

The following electives are available:

* GBU8009 Training and development

* GBU8041 Contemporary issues in employment relations

* Any other subject offered by Monash University that satisfies the objectives and standards of this labour-management relations course.

Entrance requirements

Admission to the course is open to applicants who possess an undergraduate degree, or equivalent tertiary qualification and who have had at least three years work experience, preferably in an area of industrial relations, employee relations or human resource management. In exceptional circumstances, applicants who do not possess formal qualifications will be considered for admission provided they can demonstrate:

(a) five years experience in a human resoruce management or industrial relations role, eg as a trade union organiser, researcher or personnel officer;

(b) any further information deemed necessary by the head of school.

Applicants without formal qualifications will not exceed 25 per cent of the total intake for that particular semester.

Technology requirements

It is strongly recommended that students have access to a personal computer. (Please note that the School of Business - Gippsland operates in an IBM-compatible windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have access to a modem to facilitate e-mail communication with teaching staff.

Credit for work done elsewhere

A student will be exempted from any subject where an equivalent subject has already been completed at post-secondary level. In such cases a student must select an additional elective subject(s) in substitution for the subject(s) so exempted. Application for credit for partially completed courses will be determined on a case by case basis. It is essential that subjects submitted for credit and exemption fit the philosophy and principles of this postgraduate course of study. Subjects studied more than ten years ago are regarded as beyond a reasonable time limit for applicability and generally will not be considered for credit/exemption.

Fees

This is a fee paying postgraduate course for which no additional liability under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) will be incurred. For a student undertaking the normal workload of two subjects per semester, fees of $800 per subject will apply, in addition to union fees of $60 (in 1994). Fees paid may be tax deductible in accordance with Section 51(i) of the Income Tax Assessment Act, but students will need to determine their own tax position.

Application procedures

Applications close on 3 February (first intake) and 2 June (second intake). Fees are payable on acceptance of an offer. An administration fee is payable for those students who withdraw from the course before 30 March (first intake) and 30 August (second intake).

Applications must include certified documentary evidence of entry qualifications.
