Graduate Diploma of Business (Accounting) by distance education

Course code: GO

Course director: Mr Brian Conheady

The course

The Graduate Diploma of Business (Accounting) is a fee paying postgraduate course by distance education designed primarily for persons with non-accounting degree qualifications occupying management positions in industry or government bodies.

Course objectives

On completion of the course students should:

* have a coherent understanding of accounting and related subjects which satisfies the tertiary requirements for admission to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and as an associate member (ASA) of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants;

* have a broad and balanced perspective of the inter-relationship between subjects in financial and management accounting, computing, economics, law, auditing, taxation, finance and quantitative methods;

* have advanced their personal development through the integration of their previously acquired knowledge and skills into accounting related areas.

Course structure

The course consists of fourteen subjects of study taken over two or more years by distance education. It is expected that those wishing to undertake such a course will be in employment and will undertake the course outside normal working hours. The distance education mode is particularly appropriate for such people, and the work experience of students will enable them to understand the concepts more rapidly.

Entrance requirements

Admission to the course will be open to applicants who possess an undergraduate degree in a non-accounting area. A key selection criterion will be an assessment of whether the applicant possesses the experience and ability to successfully complete the course. Previous academic achievements and work experience will be considered in this assessment.

Technology requirements

It is strongly recommended that students have access to a personal computer. (Please note that the School of Business - Gippsland operates in an IBM-compatible windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have access to a modem to facilitate e-mail communication with teaching staff.

Credit for work done elsewhere

Credits will be considered as the basis for partial completion of the graduate diploma. The merit of these applications will be determined on a case-by-case basis. It is essential that subjects submitted for credit fit the philosophy and principles of this postgraduate course of study. A maximum of five credits may be granted.

Fees

This is a fee paying postgraduate course for which no additional liability under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) will be incurred. For a student undertaking the normal workload of two subjects per semester, fees of $800 per subject will apply, in addition to union fees of $60 (in 1994). Fees paid may be tax deductible in accordance with Section 51(i) of the Income Tax Assessment Act, but students will need to determine their own tax position.

Application procedures

Applications close on 3 February 1995 (first intake) and 2 June 1995 (second intake). Fees are payable on acceptance of an offer. An administration fee is payable for those students who withdraw from the course before 30 March 1995 (first intake) and 30 August 1995 (second intake). Priority will be given to appropriately qualified early applications.
