The graduate program

A wide range of graduate programs in business and economics is offered for students with different backgrounds and with different aspirations. They differ in terms of objectives, prerequisites, content and fees. There are two main categories: masters degrees and the PhD which extend and develop knowledge of a particular discipline; and graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and masters degrees which are professionally oriented and provide a cross-disciplinary training to develop professional expertise.

Some courses are built on cumulative specialist discipline knowledge. Masters degrees in economics, commerce and business and the PhD degree are for students with an honours degree, or an equivalent postgraduate diploma. The programs involve a mixture of advanced coursework and the preparation of a research thesis. Specialist disciplines available for study include: accounting, banking, economics, econometrics, finance, management and marketing. A number of Commonwealth Government and Monash University scholarships are available to students undertaking research degrees.

The professionally oriented graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and master degrees are aimed at providing skills for improving graduates' capacity in a wide range of business and government positions. For the most part they are available to students with a bachelors degree in any area together with relevant employment experience; special entry is available for some candidates with extensive experience and no degree. Full-time, part-time and distance education study modes are available. The graduate certificates involve one semester of full-time study or equivalent, the graduate diplomas two semesters and the masters four semesters. Areas of study include accounting, agribusiness, banking, business administration, economics, econometrics, international business, industrial and employee relations, management, marketing and tourism management.
