Retail management principles

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to describe the scope and development of retailing, particularly in Australia; demonstrate an understanding of the issues, problems and practices involved in running a retail operation; describe the strategic concepts, principles and techniques necessary to manage a retail enterprise successfully; assess career opportunities in retailing.

Synopsis An overview of retailing from a management perspective. The development of retailing; the Australian retail industry and its environment; merchandising planning, control and distribution; pricing merchandise; selling and sales promotion; store location, layout and presentation.

Assessment Minor assignments (2000 words): 20 % * Major assignments (4500 words): 45% * Final examination (2 hours): 35%
