Objectives On completion of this subject students should have: an understanding of information technology (IT) and its significance for managers; an undertanding of how IT changes the skills, work practices, structures and cultures of organisations; and the ways IT can be used to enhance business strategies (including creating competitive advantage); a familiarity with systems and applications software and the issues involved in managing an organisation's information systems.

Synopsis Components of IT; characteristics of hardware, software and telecommunications; types of information systems (IS); evaluation of IS; end user computing; networking; managing `information' workers; using IT to promote business objectives and gain competitive advantage; social issues associated with IT. Computer laboratory exposure to a variety of systems and applications software including electronic mail, decision support software and expert systems software.

Assessment Major assignment (3000 words): 30% * Minor assignment (1500 words): 15% * Laboratory exercises: 15% * Examination (2.5 hours): 40%
