Production planning and control

Objectives On completion of this subject students will be able to: understand the process of developing and maintaining long, medium and short term business and manufacturing plans; understand the principles of modern production planning and control techniques; appreciate the role of forecasting and inventory management in planning; develop measures of operating performance; understand the difficulties and conflicting objectives of production scheduling.

Synopsis Scheduling as a means of co-ordination. The conflicting objectives of production planning. Long, medium and short term production planning. Production planning techniques such as MRP, MRPII, JIT and OPT. Techniques of forecasting and inventory control. The influence of the computer. Order release algorithms and monitoring of performance. The implementation of a new scheduling system. The extreme difficulty of production scheduling and some theoretical results.

Assessment One individual assignment (1500 words): 20% * Group assignment (3000-word report and a 20-minute class presentation: 30% * Final examination (2 hours): 50% * Students must pass the examination
