Business communication

6 points * One 3-hour class per week * First, second semester * Caulfield, Peninsula

Objectives On completion of this subject students should: recognise the importance of effective communication; demonstrate an understanding of the objectives and variety of business communication situations; possess a satisfactory level of skill in the various forms of written and oral business communication techniques; understand the use of electronic communication technology appropriate to contemporary management functions.

Synopsis Seminars and practical workshop sessions designed to develop oral and written communication skills; communication process and basic principles of business writing; effective message organisation; report writing techniques (including referencing); communication within meetings, electronic mail and associated issues; practical job search techniques. Students are taught the basics of word processing to enable them to meet assessment requirements.

Assessment Written (2000 words): 25% * Seminar presentation: 15% * Laboratory exercises: 20% * Final examination (2.5) hours: 40%
