Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have knowledge of the basic theories of management, and their historical development; understand the economic, social, technical, political, and cultural context of management practice; have knowledge regarding specific management functions; comprehend the linkages between the principles and practice into a decision making framework; be able to apply analytical skills to limited range of organisational and managerial issues.
Synopsis This subject aims to develop in students an ability to conceptualise the basic principles of management. Theories of management are discussed in their historical and social context. The environmental, legal, political, social, and cultural, elements within which organisations function are described. An introduction is made to the functions of management; planning and decision making; managerial control systems; and organisation processes. Structural and organisations forms are discussed and the links between these, organisation culture, strategy, other aspects of organisations and management considered.
Assessment Written (assignments 1500 words and 2500 words): 15% and 25% * Examination (3 hours): 60%
