Objectives To understand the individual, group, and organisational contexts of research and innovation; to be aware of the government role in setting priorities for research and innovation; to investigate strategies for the management of research and development; to consider approaches to commercialising research and innovation.
Synopsis The management of research and innovation must be considered as part of the strategy of technology-based organisations. This subject will analyse the organisational context of research and innovation, considering individual, group and organisational contexts and the management of the innovation based organisations. The role of government in assisting research, setting national priorities, and developing a supportive environment for research, will be discussed. Strategies for the management of research and development, using industrial, government, university and quasi-university laboratories, as models will be considered. Strategies for translating research developments from laboratory to the market place will be investigated.
