May not be offered in 1995

Dr Edward Vaughan

6 points * One 3-hour session per week * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisite: MBA5210 or equivalent

Synopsis This subject considers how knowledge of psychology and psychological methods can be applied to problems of management. In large part, it focuses on the application of psychology to the `problem of order' in industrial organisation, which is to say, the problem of ensuring the maximum cooperation, effort, and productivity from employees. The subject will examine, in particular, how behaviourist psychology might be used to control behaviour at work, and will describe how behaviourist methods differ from those favoured by `humanistic' psychology. Other topics include motivation and work incentives (and whether men and women are similarly motivated), reasoning and judgement, and communication. Class members will be invited to participate in a series of learning group discussions as part of their study of this subject.

Assessment Written (two assignments): 100%
