Organisation and management

Dr Edward Vaughan

6 points * One 3-hour session per week * First semester * Clayton

Synopsis This subject examines and compares theories on `good organisation' and `good management' that have emanated from the social sciences and philosophy. It begins by outlining Max Weber's theory on the evolution of organisational forms and administrative practices in industrial society, and why, in his view, there is no alternative to bureaucracy. Lectures then describe the major alternatives that have been proposed, or which are claimed already exist, and examine how these differ from bureaucracy and whether they are demonstrably better. A method of classifying these different views on organisation and management be suggested so that similarities and differences between them can be more easily discerned and understood.
