General operations management

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be familiar with operations management in manufacturing and service industries. Students will have been introduced to computer-based information systems and various techniques used in operations management.

Synopsis Operations management and business strategy; operations management and financial calculations; operations management in manufacturing companies - inventory control and MRP; production scheduling; line balancing; distribution management; quality management; maintenance; just-in-time systems; software systems; project management; operations management in service organisations; facility location and layout; the ISO 9000 standards; electronic data interchange and barcoding.

Assessment Written (two 2000-word assignments): 60% * Examination (2 hours): 40%
