Portfolio Management and Theory

Objectives Students will develop an understanding of the way in which participants in the financial system select and manage their portfolios within the framework of risk return analysis. A knowledge of the legal requirements of portfolio managers and an ability to recognise and implement sound investment strategies is acquired along with an appreciation of the implications for portfolio management in a global environment.

Synopsis Introduction to investment and securities markets, measuring investment return and risk, efficient markets and the valuation process, fixed interest securities, shares and share analysis, fundamental and technical analysis, options and futures, index options real estate investments, portfolio and asset pricing theory, asset allocation, portfolio performance, investment and taxation.

Assessment Assignments: 30% * Examination: 70% * Students must successfully complete both assessment modes to pass the subject.
