Aspects of trade and development

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to understand selected advanced international trade and economic development theories and policies, international trade and developing country conditions; apply this understanding in the analysis of international trade development problems and potential.

Synopsis A series of lectures and seminars on selected topics within the areas of international trade and economic development will be given. Topics will be selected to suit the research interests of staff and students. Some possible topics are strategies of economic development, theories of economic development, rethinking growth and trade theory, institutions and economic development, strategic trade theory, international trade models, rural-urban migration and unemployment, mobilisation of domestic capital resources in development, the Uruguay Round, the `Green Revolution' and agricultural development, human resources development policies, and industrialisation, urbanisation and trade strategy.

Assessment Written (3000-word essay): 30% * Oral presentations and optional examination: 70%
