Economic and social issues

Lecturer to be advised

6 points * Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week * First or second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ECO1020 and ECO1030 or ECO1100 and ECO1110

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to analyse, from an economic perspective, a number of economic and social problems and to understand the limitations of this analysis.

Synopsis The contribution of elementary economic analysis to the understanding of social issues and economic problems; the roles of positive and normative analysis. Issues are selected for discussion on the basis of their intrinsic interest and of their suitability for showing the relevance of a variety of economic concepts. Examples used are consumer information and protection; non-price rationing and procurement (including military conscription); education and the state; pollution and congestion.

Assessment Written (1500-word essay): 30% * Examination (2.5 hours): 70%
