Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the general outline of Australia's economic development; have critically examined the major explanations of the dynamics of growth and change in the Australian economy over the last two centuries; have developed analytical, written and oral skills by writing a long essay and delivering a tutorial paper; have acquired an historical understanding of Australia's current economic circumstances.
Synopsis The subject surveys the economic development of Australia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with an emphasis on fluctuations in growth rates and changes in the structure of the economy over time. Topics include the development of land-based resources in the nineteenth century, especially pastoralism, gold and agriculture; industrialisation behind tariff barriers in the twentieth century; deregulation of the economy in the recent past; development of economic institutions; the changing role of government in the economy.
