Economic history: Japan and Australia

Objectives On completion of this subject students should achieve a working knowledge of Japanese economic history since 1868 and of the integration of Australia into the Japanese-Asian economy since 1945. They should be able to analyse the growth of a total economic system, including the interaction of private business enterprises, government policy and institutions, in the process of economic growth; understand how the Australian economy relates to the changing international economy; be able to research and write a long essay in economic history.
Synopsis A survey of Japanese economic history from the Meiji Restoration of 1868 to the present, with emphasis on the period since 1945. Topics include the transition to modern economic growth; the `economic miracle' 1950 to the 1990s; the role of government; the industrial organisation of zaibatsu-keiretsu groupings; a sketch of Australian economic history since 1945; the fortunes of the rural export industries; decline and restructuring of manufacturing; Australia's economic relations with Japan since 1945. Study of Japan occupies three-quarters and of Australia one-quarter of the subject.
