Courses

Introduction

The following statements apply to all entries in this section of the handbook.

The normal procedure for enrolment and re-enrolment is for students to select, in accordance with the regulations, the subjects they wish to study in each year of their studies. It is not necessary to select subjects for the full duration of the course on admission.

Decisions made in choosing first-year subjects are important because they lay the foundations for the course as a whole. As a result, officers of the school are available to advise students on their choice of subjects at the time of enrolment. This advice, however, will be most helpful if students have already made themselves familiar with all the subjects and considered what their fields of interest are likely to be. Similarly, when re-enrolling in later years of the course, students should discuss their choice of subjects with the course advisers.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the subjects selected will meet the degree regulations.

Course regulations

Students are advised that regulations for courses offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences differ significantly to those offered by the Faculty of Arts. Regulations for the Associate Diploma of Arts (Koorie Studies), the Associate Diploma of Arts (Social Welfare), the Bachelor of Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences), the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism and Communication), the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities), the Bachelor of Social Welfare, the Graduate Certificate of Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences), the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences) and the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Social Welfare) are not available at the time of publication for inclusion in this handbook, but students wishing to consult these regulations should contact the school office or the administrative officers for advice.

Subject quotas

Students should be aware that quotas may be placed on some subjects. Such quotas do not affect students who submit a timely re-enrolment form, but may affect those submitting late forms or making late changes to their enrolment.

Application procedures

Full-time and part-time on-campus

Applicants for on-campus study should apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Application instructions are contained in an information booklet published each year by VTAC and distributed to all secondary schools in the State. Those who do not have access to the booklet should obtain one from the executive officer of VTAC, 40 Park Street, South Melbourne, 3205. Applicants who do not possess tertiary entrance requirements may be required to complete the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

Applicants for all social welfare courses should note the special requirements for entry listed under the degree below.

Applicants for the Associate Diploma of Arts (Koorie Studies) should apply direct to Student Administration. Do not contact VTAC.

Distance education

Applicants for distance education should apply direct to student administration at Monash University, Gippsland campus - not through VTAC. An information booklet, including application forms, may be obtained from Student Administration, Monash University Gippsland campus, Churchill 3842. In addition to completing the appropriate forms, applicants should provide a covering letter with a brief resume and their reasons for wishing to undertake a BA degree. Applicants who do not possess tertiary entrance requirements may be required to complete the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).
