All students in the faculty enrol initially in the general BA. Having satisfactorily completed first year, students may choose to enter a specialised degree program. The necessary prerequisites for entry to the specialised degree BA (SocSc) are first-year sequences in at least two designated social science disciplines from the following list: anthropology, economics, economic history, geography, history, linguistics, music (ethnomusicology), philosophy, politics, psychology and sociology.
The structure of the specialised BA in social science at pass level is a double major: both majors to be chosen from the list of designated social science disciplines. Students therefore take a minimum of fifty-two points over three years in each of their major sequences. The remaining forty points must include at least twenty-four points of first-year level work (including at least one other first-year sequence). Students may choose from any of the subjects available in the general BA. However, students are recommended to consider broadening their understanding of social sciences beyond the areas covered in their discipline majors by taking additional first-year subjects and/or a minor sequence in other designated social science disciplines. The participating disciplines require students who are enrolled in the specialised degree in social science to choose from the following list of subjects selected from those available at first, second and third-year level within the general BA as being the most appropriate for a specialised course of study in the social sciences. Full details of the content of these subjects are given under the entry for the relevant department or centre. Students will also be able to take an honours year in this program.
