Police studies

Bachelor of Arts (Police Studies)

The course consists of either two major strands or one major strand and two minor strands, together with sufficient electives or compulsory support subjects to make up twenty semester subjects. The police studies major (eight semester subjects) is compulsory. Other majors can be drawn from those accredited in the Bachelor of Arts degree. PCE1010, PCE1030 and PCE3020 are compulsory subjects, marked (C). Students must have passed any two of the following four subjects as prerequisites for PCE3020: PCE2010, PCE2020, PCE2210, PCE2230.

Police studies major

Bachelor of Arts (Police Studies) students must select an additional six subjects from the following for a major in police studies:

* PCE1020 Structure and organisation of policing

* PCE1040 Legal regulation and social relationships

* PCE1270 Legal studies - victimology

* PCE2010 Law and society

* PCE2020 Comparative policing

* PCE2210 Police studies

* PCE2230 Legal studies - white collar crime

* PCE3010 Development of policing in Australasia

* PCE3020 Applied research project (C)

Bachelor of Arts students should note that they may complete a major sequence from the above subjects to include two subjects at the first-year level, three at the second-year level and two at the third-year level; however, in accordance with regulation 6 of the Bachelor of Arts regulations, students taking a police studies major must also complete a major sequence from subjects included in List A (I) in this handbook, with the exception of psychology.

Other major and minor strands taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts (Police Studies) degree may be drawn from those accredited in the Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition, minor sequences in fraud studies, traffic policing studies and disaster management may be taken by Bachelor of Arts (Police Studies) students. Subjects included in these minor sequences are not available to Bachelor of Arts students.

Fraud studies minor

* FPS1100 Introduction to fraud studies

* FPS1110 Australian fraud studies

* FPS2330 Role of the regulating agencies in fraud control

* FPS2430 Research paper

Recognition

Completion of the traffic policing minor in the Bachelor of Arts (Police Studies) provides eligibility for membership of the Institute of Transportation Engineers as an associate member.

Associate Diploma of Police Studies

This course provides higher training in both academic and professional studies for serving members of police forces and can be completed in a minimum of two years full-time and four years part-time.

The course is designed around a core of ten semester subjects plus four elective subjects. PCE1010 (Introduction to police organisations) and PCE1030 (Introduction to legal studies) are compulsory introductory subjects. The ten semester subjects consist of six police studies subjects (three police studies and three legal studies) and the remaining four (elective subjects) must be taken from the departments of Anthropology and Sociology, English, Politics and Psychology. Subject to departmental approval, the four elective subjects may be chosen from courses offered within the university.
