Jewish civilisation

The Faculty of Arts is currently developing a major sequence in Jewish Civilisation. In 1995 subjects that can be taken at either second or third-year level include JWC2560/3560 (Modern Jewish history) and JWC2580/3580 (The Holocaust). Not offered in 1995 but available in alternate years is JWC2550/3550 (Jewish civilisation before the modern era).

A new course JWC2590/3590 (Alexandria-Jerusalem-Rome: connections and conflicts) is being offered in 1995 jointly with the Department of Greek, Roman and Egyptian Studies.

JWC2900/3900 (Jewish identity through the lens of contemporary literature) is also being offered for the first time in 1995.

Additional subjects will be offered in future years. As electives in other major programs, these courses may be taken without prerequisites. Students contemplating a major in Jewish civilisation are advised at first-year level to choose from relevant disciplines such as sociology, history and politics. At second or third-year level, students may choose RLT2480/3480 (The religious quest: Judaism, Christianity and Islam) as an optional subject towards a major sequence.

For further guidance, consult Professor Bernard Rechter, acting director of the Centre for Jewish Civilisation in the Department of History.
