Applied statistics

Applied statistics is available as a major taught by the Department of Mathematics. The full major sequence is offered across the Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses.

The applied statistics course has been developed to meet the needs of students studying in various areas such as psychology, sociology, environmental science and others in which skills in the quantitative analysis of data are required. The course emphasises practical applications and incorporates the use of statistical computing packages, eg SPSS, BMDP, Minitab etc, but no computing knowledge is assumed on the part of students.

First-year subjects, MAT1711 (Applied statistics 1A [Arts]) and MAT1722 (Applied statistics 1B [Arts]) provide a broad introduction to descriptive statistics, data analysis and statistical inference.

No mathematical prerequisite is required for entry into the subject MAT1711.

BA students wishing to undertake a major sequence in applied statistics (Arts) are required to complete an additional major sequence from subjects included in List A (I) in this handbook, with the exception of psychology. Students may, however, include any of the first and second-year-level applied statistics (Arts) subjects listed below in the compulsory 92 `Arts' points (subjects in List A(I) for the Arts degree.

Minor sequence

A minor sequence in applied statistics (Arts) consists of the first-year subjects MAT1711 and MAT1722 plus sixteen points (four) of the year-level subjects listed below.

Major sequence

A major sequence in applied statistics (Arts) consists of a minor sequence as outlined above plus an additional sixteen points of third-year-level subjects, as well as a further eight points of applied statistics (Arts) subjects at either second or third-year level.
