Gender studies

Scholarship which asks questions about gender, its social construction and consequences is increasingly seen as a necessary component of the humanities and social sciences.

The minor in gender studies offered by the school consists of a designated cross-disciplinary group of subjects which allow students to use and analyse various feminist or radical, comparative gender critiques of traditional areas and objects of study. The group includes subjects offered at all levels of the degree. The subject outlines describe the specific approach taken and indicate the significance of gender issues to the curriculum presented. Choosing four out of the five subjects listed below will give the student a minor in gender studies.

English/Mass communications

* GSC2409 Narratives and representations

* GSC2406 Women's writing

History-politics

* GSC2505 Courtesans, concubines and conquest

Sociology

* GSC1301 Welfare issues

Details of these subjects are listed under the entries for the appropriate disciplines. Students should note that prerequisites may be required for upper-level subjects.
